I.A.S.T.M.
Precision soft tissue therapy using specialized tools to target muscle tightness, scar tissue, and restricted mobility.
What Is I.A.S.T.M.?
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (I.A.S.T.M.) is a targeted manual therapy technique that uses contoured, handheld tools to gently glide over the skin and underlying tissues. This method helps detect and treat areas of muscular adhesion, scar tissue buildup, and restricted fascial layers, especially in cases where chronic tension or previous injury has limited normal healing.
How It Works
Using stainless steel or polymer instruments, your physical therapist applies light to moderate pressure over tight or thickened tissue. The tools help amplify tactile feedback, allowing for greater precision in identifying dysfunctional areas. As tension is released, blood flow increases, waste products are flushed, and tissue remodeling begins, aiding the body's natural repair processes.
When It's Useful
I.A.S.T.M. is particularly effective for:
-
Chronic muscle tightness or stiffness
-
Post-surgical or post-injury scar tissue
-
Tendonitis and repetitive strain injuries
-
Plantar fasciitis or IT band syndrome
-
Restricted range of motion in shoulders, knees, or hips
-
Acute or chronic strains that have not responded to other therapies
What to Expect
Most patients feel only light pressure and a gentle scraping or gliding sensation. Some minor redness may occur as circulation increases to the area. I.A.S.T.M. is always delivered within your comfort range and is often combined with therapeutic exercise, stretching, or neuromuscular re-education to reinforce functional gains.
Targeted Relief, Better Outcomes
This technique offers a controlled, non-invasive way to jumpstart healing, reduce muscular guarding, and improve movement quality, especially in tissues that feel “stuck” or unresponsive. When integrated into your custom PT plan, I.A.S.T.M. can accelerate progress and help you return to full function faster.
