Cupping Therapy
Gentle suction therapy designed to relieve tension, improve circulation, and support recovery through decompression of soft tissue layers.
What Is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping is a soft tissue technique that uses negative pressure to gently lift and decompress the skin, fascia, and underlying muscles. Silicone or plastic cups are placed on the body and create a vacuum seal, allowing stagnant blood and toxins to be drawn toward the surface while promoting fresh circulation and relaxation of tight or adhered tissues.
How It Works
Unlike traditional compression techniques (such as massage or manual pressure), cupping provides decompression, which can loosen rigid muscles, break up fascial restrictions, and accelerate nutrient delivery to injured areas. This process can also help reduce inflammation and calm the nervous system in regions of high stress or pain sensitivity.
When It's Useful
Cupping is often integrated into physical therapy care for individuals with:
-
Chronic muscle tightness or tension
-
Myofascial pain syndromes
-
Neck, back, and shoulder stiffness
-
Postural strain from prolonged sitting
-
Athletic overuse or delayed-onset soreness
-
Trigger points or areas resistant to massage
What to Expect
Cups may be stationary or gently moved over the skin, depending on your treatment goals. Mild discoloration (often called “cupping marks”) is normal and temporary, indicating increased blood flow and local detoxification. Sessions are short, non-invasive, and tailored to your sensitivity and injury history.
