Moxibustion (Moxa)

A warming therapy using herbal heat to stimulate circulation, restore vitality, and support immune health.

What Is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion, commonly called “moxa”, is a traditional therapeutic technique that uses dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) to gently warm specific acupuncture points. Heat is applied indirectly or directly over the skin to promote circulation, unblock stagnant energy, and strengthen the body’s internal systems. The therapy is often integrated into acupuncture sessions or offered as a standalone service.

Benefits of Herbal Heat Therapy

Moxa is ideal for individuals with fatigue, cold intolerance, or chronic pain that worsens in damp or winter conditions. It’s also used to support digestive health, menstrual balance, and immune resilience. The warming sensation helps soothe discomfort, reduce inflammation, and increase energy by invigorating circulation and nourishing core vitality. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, moxa is used to “build Yang energy,” which supports warmth, movement, and vitality across all systems of the body.

Safe, Comfortable, and Customizable

At Maverick Health & Wellness, moxibustion is performed in a safe, smoke-managed environment using either smokeless moxa sticks, cones, or warming devices depending on patient sensitivity. The treatment does not burn the skin and is tailored to individual needs, including areas of injury, post-surgical tension, or internal imbalance.

Common Applications

  • Menstrual cramps or hormonal imbalance

  • Chronic fatigue and cold limbs

  • Immune system support during flu season

  • Digestive sluggishness or GI sensitivity

  • Musculoskeletal pain with stiffness or damp accumulation

Integrative Wellness Tool

Moxibustion is frequently combined with acupuncture, cupping, or nutritional strategies to create a synergistic healing response. Its gentle warming effect can activate deeper tissue healing while calming the nervous system, especially helpful for patients who may be needle-averse or recovering from long-term stress or illness.
